Precautions needed for holiday road safety

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

If you plan on hitting the road this Independence Day, you're not going to be alone.

Around 35 million people are expected to hit the highway at some point over the July 4 holiday week and travel 50 miles or more, according to the American Automobile Association.

There are a lot of things to keep in mind before you depart.

Experts recommend to make sure your oil has recently been changed and your tire pressure is within the manufacturer's guidelines. You can find those specifications on the inside panel of the driver side door, in the owner's manual or printed right on the tire.

"If a tire is under-inflated, it's not sufficient to carry the weight of that vehicle and when you start doing highway speeds … heat can cause a lot of damage that can lead to failure very quickly," said Dan Zielinski with the Rubber Manufacturers Association.

Make sure you take along a cell phone charger in case an emergency comes up and you need to rely on your cell phone.

There are also the creature-comfort items to make sure you pack for the trip. Snacks, food, bottled water and plenty of traveling distractions - particularly for those long road trips - are important to make the time roll by. Kids need activities to stay distracted from driving their parents crazy too.

That can be movies, games, or planned activities. Anything like this will ease the stress of the travels.
