HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

Vehicles traveling eastbound on Interstate 215 were diverted onto the Valle Verde off-ramp due to multiple vehicle accidents Sunday afternoon.

Nevada Highway Patrol told FOX5 on scene that an accident involving a big rig started what would be a night full of accidents on Interstate 215 eastbound.

NHP said a Toyota Celica traveling at a high rate of speed on I-215 eastbound near Gibson slammed into a van because the driver was unaware of traffic ahead. The driver and passenger of the Celica had to be freed by the Jaws of Life hydraulic rescue tool. Both were transported to Sunrise Hospital for treatment. There is no word on the extent of their injuries.

More accidents caused lane closures. Henderson police said the highway was eventually shut down because of the danger the accidents were causing to other drivers.
