Red Cross of Southern Nevada asking for help after increase in fires

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada helps fire victims with temporary housing, clothing and food, all without charging a cent.

But with so many fires this past week, and more expected throughout the summer, the charity said donation are desperately needed.

The most recent victims were an adult and three kids who were in a burning apartment near Simmons and Lake Mead around 8:30 Saturday Night.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue investigators believe the blaze started in the refrigerator.

After neighbors helped them get away from the flames, the Red Cross stepped in and put them up in a hotel.

They were just one of more than twenty others the charity has helped in the past four days.

"It's been a very busy few months for us actually, we are doing a little more work than we usually do at the end of the fiscal year, but we respond to a fire on average every 30 hours in Southern Nevada," said Lloyd Ziel, Public Information Officer with the American Red Cross.

Fire fighters predict with the fireworks of the Fourth of July and the hot windy weather, the busiest part of the summer is yet to come.

With resources already challenged, the Ziel said the charity needs whatever help it can get. To donate, go to their website.
