LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

As the sun's rays beat down on heads old and young in Las Vegas, we all seek refuge.

Many stay indoors with air conditioning, but many said the heat is just the reason to chase down a tasty treat.

"It just does it; just tastes so good; it just cools you off," satisfied customer Kelly Hodge said.

She's talking about snow cones.

Business is booming for street side snow cone vendors like the Purple Penguin in Henderson.

"It gets 106, 107 and (people) start to come by our shack and cool off with a nice snow cone," said Purple Penguin employee Garrett Hoffman.

But competition along Horizon Ridge Parkway is fierce with multiple shacks serving their own syrupy concoctions.

Frost Bite Shaved Ice, Hawaiian Shaved Ice and the Purple Penguin are all located within blocks of each other.

However, the old standby of a community pool is a good one, and cost effective. Two weeks of swim lessons at Desert Breeze Aquatic Center cost only $26.
