LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Las Vegas City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to allow the City of North Las Vegas to merge its jail operation with the city. North Las Vegas later followed suit, unanimously approving the merger during a meeting Wednesday night.
The vote was made following North Las Vegas' move to close its jail facility and transport its some 200 inmates with facilities in Las Vegas.
The move was also made as part of cost cutting in the city. North Las Vegas is looking to fill a $33 million budget deficit by the end of June.
The closure, which would also mean the layoffs of 100 employees, would save the city $11 million.
North Las Vegas, though, would have to pay $3.34 million a year for the next five years to allow its inmates in Las Vegas jails, according to city manager Timothy Hacker.
