LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
The Clark County Commission is weighing the issue of regulating vendors and performers who flood Las Vegas Strip sidewalks and overhead walkways.
An ordinance was scheduled on the Commission's meeting agenda on Tuesday.
Commissioners said they not only want to make sure the Strip is an attractive and positive experience for tourists, but they also said they need to keep it safe.
Currently, costumed characters, peddlers for risqué attractions and drink and food vendors are common encounters for anyone walking on the tourist hotbed.
Some of those people claim the money received in photo opportunities, referrals or vending sales are their only source of income in this tough economy.
Referring to the people selling food and water, some commissioners said if someone gets sick as a result, they have a problem.
"There's a tendency to see that we're moving in the direction of creating an outdoor circus," Commissioner Lawrence Weekly observed. "We've reached a fork in the road where there's a problem and we have to make sure that people are safe."
A final decision is not expected to be handed down in Tuesday's meeting but should set up a path to finalizing an ordinance in the near future.
In April, the Commission voted to spend $581,000 on a study to examine the issue.
Findings of the Commission's Strip study are expected in July.
