Careless smoking was to blame for an apartment fire that killed two small dogs on Sunday, according to authorities.

Firefighters responded just before 9 a.m. at an apartment near S. Martin Luther King Boulevard and Alta Drive.

Upon arrival, firefighters entered the apartment and found the fire in a bedroom.  The fire was extinguished in less than three minutes.

Damage was estimated at $10,000.
