NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5) -
When pay raises were suspended for police officers in the midst of a fiscal emergency, North Las Vegas was in breach of contract, the city's police union said in a grievance Friday.
The pay raise freeze prompted the North Las Vegas Police Supervisors Association and the city's Police Officers Association to file legal motions.
Michael Yarter with the North Las Vegas Police Officers Association confirmed a grievance against the city. Yarter said the grievance was sent to Chief Joseph Chronister. He has 10 days to respond, Yarter noted.
The union said if no amicable resolution is met, the grievance moves on to City Manager Timothy Hacker and he'll have 10 days to respond. If an impasse continues after that, the grievance moves to arbitration between the city and the union's attorney, Yarter said.
Meanwhile, the NLV Police Supervisors Association, which represents lieutenants and sergeants, filed a lawsuit for similar breach of contract issues.
Last month, Hacker recommended pay raise freezes in the midst of a $33 million budget shortfall for the city.
North Las Vegas leaders are examining plans that include downsizing its city jail.
The city did not immediately respond to the grievance.
