LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Nevada saw another decline in new jobless claims in May, making it the 30th consecutive month with a drop in that category.
Bill Anderson, chief economist for Nevada's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation, said 16,319 initial claims were filed in May, which was a nine percent drop from the total in the same month the year before.
DETR also noted that May's claims were the lowest since May 2008.
"The slowing rate at which initial claims are falling continues to indicate that unemployment activity in Nevada may be stabilizing at an elevated level that is nevertheless much improved from what was seen during the height of the recession," Anderson said. "Particularly, this tells us that the number of people losing their jobs continues to fall, an important step to establishing steady growth in employment overall.
Anderson, though, warned the jobless remained elevated and the pace of employment is like to remain slower in the Silver State.
DETR noted initial claims in Nevada peaked at more than 36,000 in December 2008 during the recession.
The jobless rate in Nevada for April was at 11.7 percent.
