LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
With less than six months until World AIDS Day, Dec. 1, Aid for AIDS of Nevada (AFAN) is holding its popular "Every Piggy Counts" fundraising program, but this year the event is adding a rewards program for top fundraisers.
The "Every Piggy Counts" program was launched in 2010, and it encourages participants to donate to Nevada's largest and oldest nonprofit serving the HIV/AIDS community through the classic piggy bank saving strategy.
AFAN supporters are able to adopt five-inch ceramic piggy banks and fatten them up throughout the year with coins and dollar bills.
Mini piggy banks are also available for children to name, adopt and learn the value of saving money for a worthwhile cause.
AFAN will host a "Piggy Herding" for all adopted pigs collected at the AFAN offices on World AIDS Day to celebrate a year's worth of fundraising efforts.
In addition to the 2012 "Every Piggy Counts," AFAN is adding a rewards program to celebrate the top five "Piggy Parents" with prizes on World AIDS Day.
Participants don't have to wait until World AIDS Day to track their pig's growth. Local AFAN partners throughout the Las Vegas valley, including the Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf and Jamba Juice, will host monthly "Pig Outs" where supporters can turn in money, adopt additional pigs and find out where they rank among other fundraisers.
The next "Pig Out" is at the Jamba Juice and Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf on Sahara and Fort Apache on Saturday, June 16 from 10 a.m. to noon.
Since launching in 2010, "Every Piggy Counts" has raised more than $20,000 for AFAN.
