LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A new affordable housing complex for low income seniors and disabled seniors is set to celebrate its grand opening Tuesday at Lubertha Johnson Estates.

The community is a new 112-unit public housing development located at 3900 Perry Street in Las Vegas.

The project has been self-developed by the Southern Nevada Regional Housing Authority (SNRHA) with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).

Lubertha Johnson Estates is a gated community with amenities that include a Clubhouse, kitchen, library and lounge, a 10-station computer room, classroom and meeting space, laundry room facilities and on-site management offices.

Outdoor walking trails and several barbecue areas are also incorporated into the community.

Additional services that will enhance the quality of life for residents include computer classes, field trips, equipment loan program, health and medical information, flu shots, senior companions, emergency housekeeping, grocery runs, and transportation to the doctor organized through SNRHA's supportive services programs.

Lubertha Johnson Estates consists of a combination of four single-story buildings and five two-story buildings.

There are 89 one-bedroom and 23 two-bedroom energy efficient apartments, which include hearing impaired and wheelchair accessible units.

The complex is a dedication to Mrs. Lubertha Johnson. She was a community activist in the Las Vegas Valley, for almost 50 years and was a Recreational Director at Carver Park Housing Project, where she started a nursery school and preschool. Lubertha later became active with the NAACP and served as President for two terms.
