LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A preliminary court date was set for a Las Vegas teen who admitted to fatally shooting his stepfather at a residential sidewalk.
Tytan Kaehu-Scanlan appeared in a Las Vegas court room Monday for a hearing connected to the June 6 slaying of his stepfather, 44-year-old Blackie Pele, on Windmill Parkway near La Serna Street.
His preliminary hearing was set for July 3.
Kaehu-Scanland was charged with murder with a deadly weapon in connection to Pele's death. According to Las Vegas Metro police, the 19-year-old considered crossing a street to avoid a fight with his mother's former husband, who threatened to beat him up.
He instead confronted Pele and shot him in the back of his head, police said.
Kaehu-Scanlan was booked into Clark County Detention Center for the murder charge and a bench warrant for battery with substantial bodily harm in connection to a separate incident also involving Pele.
