LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Grab your sunblock and seek shade, southern Nevada is under an excessive heat warning Friday. Temperatures are expected to top out at around 107 degrees.
Experts say you can suffer heatstroke quickly if you don't follow a few important tips. First and foremost, stay hydrated with plenty of water. Drinks with electrolytes such as Gatorade are also effective for hydration.
Pools are a popular destination for beating the heat. As always, it's important to follow the ABC&Ds of drowning prevention and stay within arm's reach of small children in or near pools.
Never leave kids or pets in a hot car, even for a few minutes. Your car reaches boiling temperatures quickly in the extreme heat.
"Young children and the elderly are more susceptible than us. Little kids, just because of their body mass, can lose a lot of water very quickly," warned Dr. Kreg Burnette, pediatric emergency room physician.
It's even more important to stay hydrated if you plan on doing outdoor exercise.
Because of the excessive heat warning, Catholic Charities, the Salvation Army and Shade Tree are opening cooling stations Friday. They will be open seven days a week through the summer.
Because Friday will be especially hot, there will be additional cooling stations available for people, including local gyms and rec centers.
The following cooling stations are open Friday:
- Cambridge Recreation Center, 3930 Cambridge St., Las Vegas, 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Dula Gymnasium, 441 E. Bonanza Road, Las Vegas, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Hollywood Recreation Center, 1650 S. Hollywood Blvd., Las Vegas, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.
- Islamic Society of Nevada, 4730 E. Desert Inn Road, Las Vegas, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
- Stupak Community Center, 251 W. Boston Ave., Las Vegas, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.
