Report: Vegas officer molested girl on camping trips

Posted: Updated:

A Las Vegas Metro police officer is accused of molesting a family friend during several camping trips dating back to 2008.

Garrett Vandereecken, 43, was relieved of duty after he surrendered Tuesday and was booked on a charge of lewdness with a minor.

According to an arrest report, the daughter of a longtime friend came forward to police, alleging Vandereecken first molested her during a Memorial Day trip to Zion National Park four years ago.

The girl, who was 11 years old at the time, did not report the alleged incident or any that followed.

Police said the girl changed her mind after attending a class on sexual assault last fall. She reported the case to a youth counselor and later her parents, according to the report.

Witnesses told detectives Vandereecken was confronted with the accusations, but did not deny or admit to his involvement.

Instead, according to the report, Vandereecken made comments inferring he would commit suicide if the allegations were made public.

Vandereecken was hired by Metro police in 2008. Officials said he has been relieved without pay pending the outcome of the criminal charges and internal investigation.
