LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
The deadly rollover on the 215 Beltway interchange in the south end of Las Vegas on May 14 served as an all-too real reminder of the importance of seat belts.
Authorities said the three occupants of the early morning wreck were not wearing their seat belts. All three were ejected, killing the driver and severely injuring the other two occupants.
Nevada Highway Patrol troopers said those fatal consequences are the backbone of an upcoming crackdown on safety belt violators.
Starting Monday and running through Jun. 9, law enforcement agencies across the country will step up enforcement and cite those who do not wear seat belts.
The NHP emphasized the importance of safety belt use during the nighttime with a statistic from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The stat showed 61 percent of the more than 10,600 occupants killed in motor vehicle accidents during overnight hours were not wearing seat belts.
"Too many drivers and passengers on the road at night are not wearing their seat belts, and it all too often ends in tragedy," said Trooper Jeremie Elliott. "Our goal is to save more lives, so the Nevada Highway Patrol will be out enforcing seat belt laws around the clock."
As the campaign's title promise, people must "Click It" or face a "Ticket."
"Our officers are prepared to ticket anyone not buckled up, no warnings and no excuses," Trooper Elliott added.
