LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Doctors say it's touch and go for a K-9 shot by a Metro officer Monday. It happened when the animal got confused during a police chase.

When the K-9, Marco, arrived in an emergency room, he was thought to be dead. He was brought back to life with CPR.

Marco was in pursuit of a suspect when he confused a police officer for his target, biting him. Another officer fired on Marco, hitting him in the neck.

Specialist Ryan Gershenson said his spinal cord was hit.

"His vitals are stable but at this point it's questionable whether he'll regain neurological function," he said. "His handler has been here pretty much nonstop since this occurred. The whole K-9 unit has been here."

Marco's vets said he has about a 50-50 chance of survival.

"Nothing will make us happier than to try to get him better and get him walking again," said Gershenson. "We'll just have to see what happens."

Marco's been with Metro since January, starting on patrols last month. The officer that got bit is recovering. The suspect they were pursuing is in custody.
