LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
A Las Vegas mom arrested for child neglect told officers she left her 7-month-old child in a bath tub with running water for "only five minutes" before returning to find the toddler in the half-filled tub not breathing.
An arrest report released Monday revealed the mom, Lori Martinez, 28, called police Friday afternoon when her child was not responsive at her apartment home in the 900 block of Silverman Way.
She told arriving officers that she had left her child in the bath tub with the drain open and in a few inches of water in an upstairs bathroom.
She proceeded to the downstairs kitchen to get a drink of water. She also used a restroom during that time, the arrest report said.
Martinez returned to find the child not breathing and the bath tub halfway filled.
Martinez told officers, "I was only gone for five minutes," and that the child was floating in the tub due to a drain blockage.
First responding medical personnel helped revive the toddler, and she was transported to University Medical Center.
Police arrested Martinez for child neglect as a result of the near drowning. She was booked into the Clark County Detention Center.
Martinez is also the mother to four other children, who were not at home at the time. The toddler is in the custody of Child Protective Services.
