Raul Elizondo was 27 when he died during a confrontation with an armed suspect.
NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV (FOX5) -
Law enforcement officers from around southern Nevada will join North Las Vegas students to honor a policeman who died in the line of duty more than 17 years ago.
Raul Elizondo Day on Wednesday will be set aside in North Las Vegas to remember the law man, the city's police department said.
The celebration of his life will take place at the elementary school named for him at 4865 Goldfield Street. Wednesday will mark the 13th year he is honored.
Students will participate in classroom activities, police demonstrations and a parade featuring emergency response vehicles.
Elizondo joined NLVPD in 1992, going on to garner a commendation and an honor as "Police Officer of the Year" in 1994.
The 27-year-old officer died on Jan. 30, 1995 after spotting and engaging into an altercation with a suspicious acting man while on duty.
The suspect opened fire on Elizondo and other officers before taking his own life, NLVPD said.
Police have recognized Elizondo for his personal commitment to the community and his willingness to help others.
The all-day memorial is slated to begin at 7:45 a.m. with a flag raising ceremony. Several events follow until 3 p.m.
