Letter carriers 'Stamp Out Hunger' with food drive

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Letter carriers in southern Nevada want to collect and deliver as much food as they can to feed the hungry.

As part of the 20th "Stamp Out Hunger" Food Drive, members of the National Association of Letter Carriers are appealing to the people they deliver mail to for non-perishable food items.

Last year, the organization said more than 70 million pounds of food was collected in what it touts as the largest single-day food drive.

The national food drive is scheduled to take place Saturday. Members of the southern Nevada chapter of the NALC, though, said a partnership with grocery store Albertsons and Goodwill has allowed ongoing donation since May 2.

Organizers said the food drive is its yearly response to the millions of people who go hungry each year. The U.S. Department of Agriculture said nearly 49 million homes were food insecure last year.
