LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The city of Las Vegas is celebrating the opening of a new affordable housing complex in an area that became a center for homeless encampments.

The Sky View Pines Family Apartments at 21 W. Owens Avenue, west of Las Vegas Boulevard, opened to the public last July, but, on Thursday, the city celebrated its opening as it added new residents.

Nonprofit corporation Nevada H.A.N.D. provided the development of the complex in order to give people an affordable option for fully-accommodated living.

The city said Sky View Pines was built with seniors and low income families in mind. Rental rates for residents are calculated based on the specific needs of each household.

Nevada H.A.N.D. reported rental prices, on average, between $369 to $888 for a one-or-two percent household.

The area once was home to some 300 homeless people within the last few years, city data showed.
