2-day event helping Vegas homebuyers

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A two-day event is aiming to help hopeful home buyers in Las Vegas with the chance at purchasing property.

Financial institution Wells Fargo is offering down payment assistance grants of up $15,000 under the NeighborhoodLIFT program.

The event slated for Friday and Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., will provide prospective home buyers a chance to see if they qualify for this assistance.

Organizers also said the event will provide resources such as home buying education and a tour of some of the properties up for sale in the area.

While the event is a move that should help in filling existing homes, some realtors said the supply might end up being scarce.

Some homes, one former realtor said, have even stood empty for years and may be actually deteriorating.

"The yards and everything don't get maintained - it lowers property values for everybody," former realtor Mark Carl said of homes in his northwest Las Vegas neighborhood.

In the meantime, Wells Fargo said billions of dollars are being pumped into mortgage lending and another $9 million are being used for the down payment grants under this program.

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman said she hopes Wells Fargo's move will push other banks to provide a similar program.

The NeighborhoodLIFT event is slated for the Riviera Hotel and Casino, Royale Ballrooms.

You can register for the event at www.neighborhoodlift.org.
