HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

The Henderson toddler who died after being attacked by his pet canine will be laid to rest.

A private funeral service is scheduled Thursday morning for 1-year-old Jeremiah Eskew-Shahan.

According to authorities, the child died after his family's dog, Onion, latched his jaws around the boy's head and began shaking him back and forth.

The incident happened April 27 during a celebration of the child's birthday.

The boy's father, Chris Shahan, said since Jeremiah was just learning to walk, he used Onion's fur to pull himself up, which may have triggered the canine to attack.

"I tried everything I could think of to do to try and get him off our baby," Jeremiah's grandmother, Elizabeth Keller, recalled.

Chris Shahan said he hopes the tragedy is a lesson to other parents with pets.

"It just goes to show you that no matter how close you are to your animal, you just got to watch out when it comes to your child," Shahan said.

The family set up the Jeremiah Eskew-Shahan Memorial Fund with Wells Fargo. Those who wish to make a donation can do so at any area Wells Fargo bank branch.

The fund is under account No. 7709151398 and wired donations can be directed to Wells Fargo Bank N.A., 420 Montgomery, San Francisco, CA 94104 under routing transit No. 121000248.

Authorities said Onion was placed in an animal shelter for observation. It is expected he will be euthanized.
