A 1-year-old boy is now dead after he was attacked by his family's pet dog Friday night in Henderson.
It was the evening of the boy's first birthday celebration at his grandmother's house when the attack happened. The boy was on the floor Friday evening attempting to pet the family dog when the 120-lb Mastiff/Rhodesian mix clamped its jaws around the boy's head and shook him. Family members tried to free the toddler from the dog's jaws.
Later, Henderson fire paramedics rushed the boy to St. Rose Dominican Hospital where he was then flown by helicopter to University Medical Center's Trauma Center. At 1:45 a.m. Saturday, the boy succumbed to his injuries.
The 6-year-old family dog is in quarantine at the Henderson animal shelter for the next 10 days for a rabies check where he will later be euthanized.
The family said their son's name was Jeremiah Eskew-Shahan, and the pet dog named Onion. They said Onion was part of the family since he was a puppy and that this was the first time he had ever shown aggression toward anyone.
