DEKALB COUNTY, AL (WAFF) -

A monument to remember those killed in DeKalb County is expected to be unveiled Saturday in Rainsville.

The ceremony is designed to pay respect to the 35 people who died in DeKalb County one year ago.

The monument was completed at DeKalb County Schools Coliseum located next to Plainview High School.

Officials said the monument was etched with a picture of downed trees and a tornado on one side and on the other side is new trees along with a dove and the names of those who died.

The community event is designed to honor those who died as well as those left behind and the emergency responders who worked tirelessly to save the ones they could.

The mayor said it will be present for generations to come.

"Come here and see their names here and they'll remember what all happened on April 27 and their people weren't forgotten," said Mayor Donnie Chandler.

The ceremony is expected to start at 2 p.m.
