WEST HAVEN, CT (WFSB) -
Two children have been taken from a West Haven home after police said they were found living among animal feces and live chickens.
Tanya Domerest, 31, and Wayne Farquharson, 55, are facing a slew of charges after the deplorable living conditions were discovered.
West Haven police said they responded to the Westfield Street home Tuesday after several reports of property and housing code violations.
Upon arrival at the home, police said they found stripped boats, tires, propane tanks and unregistered vehicles, and piles of scrap metal were thrown about the yard.
Inside, police said, several more housing code violations were found.
Animal feces, mold and live chickens were found, as well as dangerous combustible materials, a propane tank connected to a hot plate and several exits of the home were blocked, according to the West Haven Police Department.
Child neglect was evident as Department of Children and Family officials said there were piles of dirty laundry, piles of dirty dishes and old food scattered around the home.
Domerest and Farquharson were charged with risk of injury to a minor and abatement of a fire hazard.
Both were taken to the West Haven Police Department to be booked.
The two children living in the home were sent to live with family members until DCF officials could finish their investigation into the incident.
Police said two cats and two chickens were seized by animal control, and the house was deemed uninhabitable.
Neighbors say the home has been in deplorable condition for years and the city acted after getting a number of complaints.
Domerest and Farquharson are not allowed to step anywhere near the house without police permission.
The incident remains under investigation.
