The man who allegedly attacked a woman with a machete recently will plead guilty. Armando Vergara-Martinez is charged with attempted murder.

On Tuesday, FOX5 spoke with the victim, who recounted her horrific ordeal.

"What can you do without your hands? Tell me," said victim Maria Del Carmen Gomez.

Vergara-Martinez, her ex-boyfriend, allegedly blindsided her, coming out of nowhere in a grocery store parking lot and severing her hand with a machete.

"I tried to open my car. He started hitting me without saying [anything]," she recalled.

"He stabbed me two, three times on my head. I felt such strong hits over there."

Gomez suffered severe head wounds and lost consciousness moments before the machete severed her hands.

"He cut these three fingers and left it on the floor," she said.

Vergara-Martinez appeared in court Tuesday for the crime. He waived his right to a preliminary hearing. His attorneys indicated he will plead guilty.

As the case goes through the legal system, Gomez hopes this will highlight the desperate need for tougher laws and penalties for domestic violence offenders.

"[Those] kind of people should be in prison. [It would be] safer if they were in there."

Gomez believes her ordeal could serve as a wake up call for people in dangerous relationships to get out before it's too late.

"This guy tried to kill me," she said. "He premeditated everything. Tell them to walk away. Don't stay there."

Gomez will see her doctor on Wednesday. Surgeons were able to reattach her hands, but her recovery is far from over.
