LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas-area Thai organization, the Mekong Life Foundation, will produce the first annual Thai-Laos New Year Festival this weekend.

It will take place Friday through Sunday in the parking lot of the Suncoast Hotel and Casino located at 9090 Alta Drive.

The opening ceremony will follow Thai tradition: monks from around the country will bless the grounds through lighting incense and performing sacred chants.

The Mekong Life Foundation will import everything from traditional Thai dance troops from the Phahayakul School of Dance, to more than 50 food and display booths.

Also included in this program will be the much anticipated "Songkran" water arena.

Songkran heralds the beginning of the solar year and is the most important festival for the people of Thailand.

The festival is celebrated over three days. "Mahasongkran" is on April 13, marking the end of the old year, "Wan Na" on April 14 is the day after and April 15 is "Wan Thaloeng Sok," when the New Year begins.
