Gary Sumption is set for one last day as Search and Rescue One, known to members of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department as SR1.

Sumption will retire Friday after 24 years with Metro and more than 30 years as a Search and Rescue member.

Sgt. Gavin Vesp, Sumption's team leader, said, "To lose somebody with Gary's experience and his historical perspective… is a huge loss."

Sumption earned the title of SR1 for being one of Metro's first Search and Rescue officers and he is the most senior member today.

"The thing I will miss the most about doing Search and Rescue for Metro… the people, the officers, the pilots, the volunteers and mechanics that make this unit function on 24 hours a day basis," he said.

As for retirement, Sumption says he will sleep and go fishing.
