Parishioner attacked outside Las Vegas church

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

A parishioner at St. Joseph Church was attacked by a gunman during a robbery attempt early Sunday morning, according to Las Vegas Metro police.

An earlier police report had identified the victim as a priest, but Metro corrected that information.

Authorities released a sketch of the suspect on Thursday. He is described as a white man in his late 20s to early 30s, 180 lbs, with light brown hair.

The church is located at Sahara Avenue and Tenaya Way. According to police, the victim had parked his car on nearby Via Olivero Avenue and was walking to the church when a light-colored sedan pulled up to him and the passenger asked for directions.

After he was given directions, the passenger got out, pointed a gun at the parishioner and demanded his wallet, police said.

The victim ran, but was thrown to the ground by the suspect, who pointed the gun in the man's face, repeated his demand and threatened to shoot him, according to police.

The suspect then got back in the car and fled. Authorities did not say if the person's wallet was taken.

Sunday's attack happened at about 8 a.m., when St. Joseph Church holds its first mass.

Police said the driver of the sedan was also a white man and the vehicle may have a green stripe on it.

Anyone with information about the attack is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 702-38-5555.
