LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

The Clark County Coroner has identified the victim of a deadly hit-and-run crash Thursday morning. 27-year-old Joshua Savala was killed around 6:20 a.m. on a sidewalk north of downtown Las Vegas.

The crash occurred near Las Vegas Boulevard and Washington Avenue.

Investigators said Savala was walking to work on the sidewalk with a friend when he was struck.

The driver involved fled the scene but was caught by police in North Las Vegas a couple of hours later.

Police have identified the driver as 23-year-old Octavio Echague. Police said he showed no signs of impairment from drugs or alcohol at the time of his arrest.

Police closed Las Vegas Boulevard, from Washington to Cashman Center, as they investigated the incident.

This marks the 24th fatal traffic accident in Metro's jurisdiction in 2012.

According to Catholic Charities, Joshua Savala started work with the non-profit 18 months ago. He started in the Maintenance and Facilities Dept. and had transferred into the Food Services Division as a driver for Albertsons Fresh Rescue pick-up. He had been training to deliver meals to the Sunrise Children's Foundation.

Catholic Charities issued the following statement to FOX5 Thursday afternoon:

We are deeply saddened by this news. Josh was a valued part of our Catholic Charities family.  Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and his friends.  He will be truly missed.
