A Henderson man who kidnapped a 7-year-old girl and forced a cab driver to take him to California last year Wednesday pleaded guilty to kidnapping, carjacking and federal child pornography charges.
29-year-old Matthew Charles Hayward faces a minimum of 20 years in prison and up to $750,000 in fines. He is scheduled to be sentenced on June 1.
On March 26, 2011, Hayward left the residence he was living at with the girl. He gagged the girl's mouth with a bandana and drove around the valley with her until his car broke down. He then called a cab from a local gas station.
Hayward forced the cab driver to take the two to California at knifepoint. Hayward forced the driver out in Barstow and fled with the man's cab and belongings.
Hayward was eventually arrested in Flagstaff, AZ on an unrelated charge.
Police discovered Hayward's cell phone, which he had lost while fleeing police, in Barstow. Investigators found a pornographic image on the phone of the kidnapping victim's 8-year-old sister, taken by Hayward.
