HENDERSON, NV (FOX5) -

An $11.7 million renovation project is currently underway at Sunset Park, which means parts of the park will be closed until the end of this year.

The project is currently in Phase 2 with the construction and upgrades expected to be complete by late 2012. Some of the improvements include new trails through the park, new playground areas for kids including a pirate ship, a tree house and a splash pad.

Steven Corry, the Assistant Director of Clark County Parks and Recreation, said there will also be a new pedestrian plaza that will be right next to the iconic lake at Sunset Park.

"People are really going to enjoy these improvements," says Corry.

And the price is certainly right: free!

"The park is absolutely free. It's funded by Clark County. It's one of our great facilities that's been here since 1967," says Corry.

The project started back in the summer of 2011 and is being funded by the sale of federal lands as part of the Southern Nevada Public Lands Management Act. About 1/3 of the park is currently closed for the construction.
