Police hesitant to call Islamic mortuary fire ‘hate crime’

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas Metro police on Wednesday had a suspect in custody in connection with a fire that destroyed a partially-built Islamic mortuary, but they were not calling the incident a hate crime.

Squatters, taggers or copper thieves could have also been behind the 1 a.m. fire on Lamb Boulevard north of Cartier Avenue, police told FOX5's Doug Johnson.

The mortuary, owned by a Muslim family, was being built on an empty lot with no immediate neighbors, leading police to label the fire suspicious.

The family did not want to speak to FOX5 on camera.

Federal investigators -- in this case Homeland Security -- were called because the fire happened at the site of a religious structure.
