New Clark County DA promises changes

Posted: Updated:

After being sworn in at the Clark County Board of Commissioners meeting Tuesday morning, Steve Wolfson officially became Clark County District Attorney.

"I feel very privileged and honored to be the District Attorney for Clark County. I'm a little scared, it's an awesome job, it's a lot of responsibility," Wolfson told FOX5.

But Wolfson says his office won't go back to business as usual.

First of all he says the DA's office will take a more active role in officer-involved shooting investigations, and he will personally take part, keeping up on details of the case.

"I'll be there at the scene, either myself, or one of my top deputy DAs… (and I'll) request from the sheriff that he submit to me within 72 hours a briefing. I want to be told of what their investigation has revealed quickly," Wolfson said.

Wolfson said he believes trying the new rules to the Coroner Inquest Process, before changing them.

"A lot of people put in a lot of time and effort, a lot of hours to improve the ordinance, but we haven't had a chance to give it a try," Wolfson said.

In terms of medical marijuana, Wolfson promises to enforce the law but admits there is a gray area.

He also says his office will continue to seek the death penalty when appropriate, but that may not be as often as his predecessor David Roger sought it.

"People that deserve to receive the death penalty, we will seek it, and we will obtain it," Wolfson said.

Meanwhile, Wolfson offered advice for whoever takes over his old Las Vegas City Council seat.

"City Council is part-time, so you can have fun at it, but you have a responsibility to a special quality of life that's out in Ward 2," Wolfson told FOX5.
