LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Las Vegas Metro police on Tuesday released photographs of two people accused of committing multiple thefts at the world famous "Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas" sign.
Juan Cordero, 49, and Jakeline Delgado, 26, face two counts of auto burglary, although additional charges are anticipated, police said.
The two are accused of stealing items from cars parked at the sign on Las Vegas Boulevard south of Russell Road.
Metro police say Cordero and Delgado would sit in a car for hours, waiting for visitors to leave their cars unlocked. When the people were taking pictures, police say the suspects would snatch their valuables from the cars.
"I think that's pretty low down, but it's a pretty good scam," one visitor told FOX5.
Metro says it's the perfect crime of opportunity. It would take just seconds, and police say since the cars were unlocked, the suspects didn't draw any unwanted attention.
Metro wants to remind everyone of the motto Lock, Take, Hide: Lock your car, take your keys and hide your belongings, no matter where you are parked.
Police say there could be more victims. They are asking for anyone with information about the thefts to call Crime Stoppers at 702-385-5555 or Metro's Property Crimes Section at 702-828-3267.
In 2008, a parking lot was constructed in the median of Las Vegas Boulevard to give the public easier access to the sign.
One year later, it was added to National Register of Historic Places.
