LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Freshman state Sen. Elizabeth Halseth resigned from office on Friday, less than halfway through her 4-year term in the Nevada Legislature.
The state Senate Republican Caucus issued a statement saying its members "understand and respect her decision to focus on providing for her young children."
"We wish Elizabeth the best of luck in her future endeavors and respectfully ask that as she transitions back into private life that she and her children be afforded the privacy necessary to move beyond this difficult time," the statement continued.
Halseth was elected in 2010 at the age of 27, making her the youngest woman elected as a senator to the Legislature.
She made headlines earlier this week when the Las Vegas Sun reported that Halseth had been missing meetings and was not making herself available to the media or fellow lawmakers.
Her husband, Daniel, was arrested in October and charged with open and gross lewdness. According to a police report, Daniel Halseth tried to force himself on his wife.
The couple has three children.
