LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Police believe child abuse played a role in a toddler's death Thursday night.

According to Las Vegas Metro police, officers responded to a medical distress call in the 6300 block of Rose Tree Lane at 10:21 p.m.

The child was rushed to University Medical Center but died more than an hour after the original call.

Officers arrested Cory Terrell Simmons, 35, in connection to the child's death.

Police said Simmons, who is the boyfriend of the child's mother, was the sole caregiver at the time of the incident. Simmons is a registered sex offender in the state of Illinois.

"He will get what he deserves," said neighbor D. Foster.

Two other children in the home were asleep at the time. Neighbors say they are the older sisters of the victim. They were taken into the custody of Clark County Child Protective Service.

The Clark County Coroner's office will disclose the child's identity and exact cause of death.
