LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Barking dogs alerted a northwest Las Vegas family to a fire at their home early Friday morning, and while the six people escaped, the animals did not survive.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue reported the fire around 6:23 a.m. in the 3700 block of Thom Boulevard, just off Gowan Road near N. Decatur Boulevard.

Officials said a trailer parked on the side of the residence caught fire and soon spread to the neighboring home.

The dogs alerted a family member living in the trailer, allowing that person to get out.

As the flames engulfed the trailer and house, officials said the dogs ran back inside the trailer, where they succumbed to smoke inhalation.

The dogs' owner said he tried grabbing the animals by the tail to keep them from running back toward the fire, but he couldn't stop them.

The fire was later ruled accidental and caused an estimated $200,000 in damage.

Video posted on YouTube Friday afternoon showed the flames erupting as a student on board a school bus recorded on the fire.
