Although Mark Coulson says he's shocked that his former next door neighbor, 31-year-old Michael Lee Crane, was arrested for murder in the deaths of Glenna and Lawrence Shapiro in Paradise Valley last week, he also says he's not totally surprised.
Coulson says he was warned by Crane's own cousin, "He's a felon. He's out on probation. He's dangerous. Do not have any conflict with him. Do not approach him."
Coulson says Crane's aunt's home foreclosed in recent weeks and Crane had to be forcibly removed by police.
At the time, Coulson remembers police served a search warrant and arrested Crane after taking a number of items from the home.
Crane's cousin told his neighbor there were "guns, ammunition, drugs, drug paraphernalia. He had machetes that were stuck in the walls and a stolen motorcycle in the living room."
The cousin says Crane's sister bailed him out. Soon after, a fire broke out at the vacant home in the middle of the night.
Coulson recalls the cousin telling him some family members feared for their lives, saying, "We know he's coming for us. He needs money. He needs money bad."
Paradise Valley police arrested Michael Lee Crane on two counts of first degree murder, two counts of kidnapping, as well as charges of armed robbery, burglary and arson.
Four others were arrested in the case on charges ranging from theft and trafficking stolen property to obstruction of justice.
