Homicide suspect killed in police shootout ID'd

The Clark County Coroner's office identified a homicide suspect shot by police during a confrontation earlier this week.

The Coroner's office said Jason Baires, 23, died of gunshot wounds of the head and chest after  he was shot by officers early Wednesday morning.

According to police, Baires was suspected of a slaying just hours before at a home in the 4600 block of Stacey Avenue.

Police found 50-year-old Rodolfo Velasco-Bayardo dead inside a home. The Coroner's office said the victim died from multiple sharp force injuries due to assault.

Police initiated a search for a suspect and encountered Baires just two miles away from the crime scene in the area of Washington Avenue and Michael Way.

Baires, who was inside a car when police found him, tried to allude police on foot before being hit by a patrol car.

When officers closed in on him, he fired a shot from his gun, hitting an officer. Police returned fire, killing Baires.

The officer struck by Baires' shot was hospitalized with non-life threatening injuries, police said.

An investigation into the slaying, pursuit and shooting are ongoing.
