MARICOPA, AZ (CBS5) -
A shelter has rescued 93 dogs and five exotic birds from a rural Arizona property.
The birds have now been turned over to the Arizona Exotic Bird Rescue in Tempe.
The Pinal County Animal Care and Control said Thursday that they've reached capacity and are working under emergency conditions after responding to another case of extreme hoarding south of Maricopa.
According to Animal Control, they found several inches of fecal matter on the floor that was also covered with garbage. There was no electricity or running water.
The shelter said one of the dogs had severely infected bite wounds and had to be put down.
"I cannot fathom how the two adult residents were able to live there," said Kaye Dickson with Animal Control.
The owner did surrender the animals which allows them to be put up for adoption in the coming weeks after they are examined by a veterinarian.
As for the owner, CBS 5 News was told, they are currently under investigation for hoarding the animals, however it will be up to the county attorney's office if criminal charges are pursued.
