President Obama makes campaign stop in Vegas

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Having set his election year agenda in place during the State of the Union address, President Barack Obama left Washington on Wednesday to take his message west.

Las Vegas is one of the first stops on the trip, with the president scheduled to arrive at about 6:30 p.m.

The White House has not disclosed Obama's agenda for Wednesday evening or where he was expected to stay.

But officials at McCarran Airport advised drivers to prepare for road delays around the airport during the president's arrival.

Many in Southern Nevada know what they'd like to hear from the president.

"That he'll help us create more jobs, particularly here in Las Vegas," said Wista Johnson.

"I'd like to know more about the job market, and what's going on to help the economy recover," Ernest Golden said.

With a 12.7 percent December unemployment rate in Las Vegas, it's no surprise many want to hear about job creation from our Commander in Chief.

Still, even though the economy is the most important topic for many, there are other issues President Obama discussed in the State of the Union Address which some feel he could give more details on.

"I'd like to know what are they doing to help the young veterans come home," Golden told FOX5.

"I like when anybody wants to reform education, but reforming education is a big job," said Johnson, who's a community college teacher.

Some want an explanation from the president on what he told the nation he's not doing.

"He's canceling the pipeline, which I was all in favor of, and here's a good source of oil, a good source of jobs, he's canceling that," said Richard Relyea, who tells FOX5 he is not a supporter of the president.

Obama last visited southern Nevada in October, where he outlined a mortgage refinancing plan in a Sunrise Manor neighborhood.

President Obama is scheduled to speak at a UPS facility near the airport Thursday morning.

The location is not far away from the Nevada Policy Research Institute, which promotes private, rather than government solutions.

Tomorrow, NPRI President Andy Matthews hopes President Obama will lay out a new plan for the country which doesn't rely on government oversight.

"But by empowering the private sector, removing the yoke of big government and allowing entrepreneurs and private and free citizens to act according to their own will and allow the to pursue some of the solutions," Matthews said.

Although the contents of the speech haven't been released, the president delivered a speech in Iowa Wednesday that touched on many of the economic policies discussed in the State of the Union address.
