Nevada lawmakers weigh-in on Dec. jobless figures

Posted: Updated:
LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Nevada's Congressional delegation are responding Monday to last month's jobless figures that saw the state's unemployment rate drop to 12.6 percent.

Sen. Harry Reid issued the following statement:

"We continue to see signs of progress in Nevada's economy, but far too many workers are still struggling to find jobs in our state.  We must work together in Congress to pass a year-long extension of the payroll tax cut to keep dollars in the pockets of middle-class families who need them most.  It shouldn't be a fight to pass common-sense, job-creating policies like the payroll tax cut, or to rebuild our roads, schools and bridges. I won't rest until every Nevadan who wants a job has one, and I urge Republicans to put politics aside to work with us so Nevadans can get back to work."

Sen. Dean Heller issued the following statement:

"News that Nevada's unemployment numbers have improved is welcome news. The fact remains that far too many Nevadans are still struggling to stay in their homes, find good paying jobs and provide a better future for their children. Washington needs to get serious about passing policies that make a difference Nevadans can feel. By reforming the tax code, reducing government spending, and decreasing burdensome regulations, Washington can help create the long-term economic recovery Nevadans deserve."

Rep. Shelley Berkley released the following statement :

"While any news of  progress is encouraging, there is still much work to be done as thousands of Nevadans are still looking for a job.  The answer is straght forward: start prioritizing middle-class families ahead of Wall Street millionaires, Big Oil executives and corporations that ship American jobs overseas.  This election will present voters with that clear choice between my commitment to creating middle-class jobs and the pro-Wall Street agenda of Washington Republicans like Dean Heller."
