President's Vegas visit part of re-election strategy

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Air Force One will be landing in Las Vegas Wednesday for an overnight stay following the State of the Union address.

The White House says President Barrack Obama will arrive in the evening as part of a multi-state tour. He will re-enforce many themes he plans to lay out in the State of the Union address Tuesday night. Many details of Obama's visit aren't public yet, but he will be spending the night and leaving Thursday.

Although this is an official White House visit, political analyst Mitch Fox said this is a campaign stop for Obama.

"Nevada is a huge swing state, and even if some GOP candidates are turning a cold shoulder to Nevada, Nevada's Republican caucus, President Obama knows, it's very important," said Fox.

Obama's campaign has made it publicly known that Nevada is among the states the president plans to win in order to serve a second term. He won the Silver State in the 2008 general election, but his re-election bid is a whole new game.

"He's even with Romney right now in Nevada," said Fox. "Keep in mind in 2008, (Obama) won Nevada by 12.5 percentage points. He's got a lot of ground to pick up."

The president's last trip to Las Vegas was in November. During that visit, he unveiled a plan to help Americans refinance their homes. This time, Fox said it's about mobilizing unions, independents, Hispanics and Democratic volunteers.

In Nevada, Democratic volunteers are preparing for the Democratic caucus this Saturday. Obama is running unopposed, said Nevada State Democratic Party Communications Director Zach Hudson.

"We're using our caucus as an organizing opportunity to mobilize our key volunteers that are going to be critical to re-electing President Obama,' said Hudson. "These are the people that are going to be ready on day one, the moment after the caucus, to make phone calls, to knock on doors."
