LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -
Swishing down the mountain at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort is about to get even better if it gets final approval for an expansion plan from the U.S. Forestry Service.
The resort said that approval could come any day now and they're excited about the potential this $35 million expansion plan would bring.
The plans take the existing three lifts to a total of nine, and they'll go from one surface lift to three. They will also add parking spots and remove the lodges currently at the base of the resort to create two new structures.
Resort officials have been given initial approval but are waiting for the final word before they move ahead with the expansions. They expect, once the 10-year project is complete, to go from approximately 10 year-round staff to around 50 and from around 250 seasonal and volunteer positions to close to 600. There will also be construction projects and jobs during the summer months to accomplish the expansion goals.
The expansion plan also calls for more summer fun, including hiking, mountain biking, frisbee and maybe even summer concerts. One of the lodges proposed in the expansion is slated to be a year-round facility.
"It's still one of the closest ski resorts to a major metropolitan area in the country," said Director of Business Development, John Morelli.
LVSSR says they hope to double their busiest days once the expansion is complete.
The ski season at LVSSR usually lasts from Thanksgiving to Easter, but this year they were able to open in mid-November due to some early snow. They also say it's Learn To Ski or Snowboard Month and they are offering special deals on lifts tickets and lessons.
