Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Red CrossIn the spirit of the holiday, nearly 200 volunteers showed up Monday to educate the community about fire safety and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s call for community service.
From Boy Scout troops to religious organizations, people canvassed four Las Vegas neighborhoods with high instances of fires over the past year.
The Red Cross - partnering with HOPE worldwide, area fire departments and other community organizations - armed volunteers with door hangers, water and snacks to teach our community about safety.
"We hand out this information so that people can be aware of how they can best protect their homes and their families from fires," said Donna Robinson - Red Cross Emergency Services Volunteer Coordinator. "I schedule the volunteers who respond to house fires every day. I'd wish they didn't have to respond to a fire every day. I'd rather spread this good information around, than send volunteers out into the night to respond to a family disaster."
Scott Emerson, CEO of the Southern Nevada chapter of the American Red Cross said, "What a great way to honor the memory of a great American! These folks have reached out a helping hand to their neighbors to show them that they care about them. Dr. King's legacy of us helping one another is something that we can all be proud of."
The Southern Nevada Chapter of the American Red Cross responds to a residential fire every 30 hours, on average. For information on how to donate or volunteer, click here.
