RENO, NV (FOX5) -

Death from domestic violence is a nationwide epidemic, and particularly troubling is the high rate of it in Nevada.

To address the problem, Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto Thursday held the first meeting of the Domestic Violence Fatality Review Statewide Team.

The meeting, held in Reno, brought together 14 newly-appointed members who were sworn in and trained.

The group will review deaths statewide in order to gain a better understanding of the frequent results of domestic violence. It's hoped this data will allow for the implementation of preventative measures throughout our state.

"I'm pleased and excited by today's first meeting of the Domestic Violence Fatality Review Team," said Masto. "We need to address domestic violence and improve our system responses to victims in order to save lives. The recommendations that will be coming from this group will greatly assist us in addressing this issue in the Silver State."

According to the Violence Policy Center, Nevada ranks first in the nation per capita for women murdered by men with the use of a handgun.

The team is made up of members of law enforcement, victim advocates, survivors, clergy, social services and more.
