Vegas elementary kids get gift of books

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Students from Ollie Detwiler Elementary in Las Vegas are getting a special gift Tuesday that most of them don't have at home -- books.

Thanks to Spread the Word Nevada, each of the 620 students at the struggling school will get a backpack and five books to start their own home libraries during an official adoption ceremony.

This is the 27th school the organization has adopted. Schools on the waiting list for the adoption process need to meet criteria based on academic need and economic status.

Spread the Word will continue to provide books and literacy services to the students, thanks to funding by philanthropist John Krakauer and U.S. Bank.

Spread the Word Nevada has distributed more than 1.8 million gently-used and new books to approximately 223,000 low-income youth in Southern Nevada.
