The eight day Festival of Lights, Hanukkah began at sundown Tuesday. Menorahs were lit across the valley and world.
Fremont Street lit the City of Las Vegas' official menorah. The M Resort also had a lighting and celebration.
There are an estimated 60,000 Jews in Southern Nevada.
Families say taking part in the community Hanukkah festivities is nice. "It's wonderful to have all the Jewish people from the community come down and celebrate together," Arlene Weber said.
The eight day holiday commemorates that nearly 2,200 years ago, the Jews fought for their religion and reclaimed their temple.
They only had enough pure oil to light it for one night, but it lasted eight instead.
Rabbis say the celebration is truly a world celebration because it marks freedom of religion. "When the Jewish people were victorious, it allowed all the religions to practice as they see fit," Rabbi Shea Harlig, director of Chabad of Southern Nevada, said.
At the Young Israel Aish Las Vegas, Rabbi Yitz Wyne agrees the message should be received by all. "When that little miracle happened- that's a sign for all of us, that God sends us subtle messages," Wyne said.
Wyne just wrote a book called Life is GREAT! Revealing the 7 Secrets to a More Joyful YOU!
He says whatever your religion, it's important to remember, not only during the holidays, but that every day can be more joyful it just takes a little work. "Through our decisions, our thought processes, if we decide to focus on the goodness in our lives, we will be happier," he said.
