Police shoot, kill man suspected in Vegas break-in

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -

Las Vegas Metro police officers shot and killed a burglary suspect after he allegedly drove his vehicle into a police cruiser responding to the crime.

The shooting happened at about 1:00 a.m. Monday at the Alondra condominiums on Rainbow Boulevard near Smoke Ranch Road.

A Metro spokesperson told FOX5 a neighbor called 911 to report someone trying to break into a condo at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday.

When police arrived, the suspect was nowhere to be found, but, later, officers spotted the suspect's vehicle, a white Cadillac, returning to the scene.

When officers tried to question the driver for about half an hour, according to police, the suspect tried to escape, ramming into at least one police cruiser.

An officer responded with gunfire, killing the suspect.

Police said the suspect did not appear to be armed.

As police cleaned up Monday, neighbors who live in the area are reacting to the news.

"I'm glad that they did kill this person before another officer here in Vegas gets killed," said Joyce Emnons, who has lived in her condo, right in front of the fatal shooting, for more than two years.

Emnons told FOX5 burglars have tried getting into her place three times, and once she caught a suspect on her back patio.

"As I grabbed him, he started to lower his pants and he dropped his knife, luckily," said Emnons.

She feels the officers in this case were justified in using lethal force.

"Why should they go out there every day, put their lives on the line? Yes, they were definitely right to do it," Emnons said.

The man's identity will be released by the Clark County Coroner's Office.

Officers involved in the shooting will be placed on paid administrative leave, according to police.
